Residents reminded as garden bin collections suspended in some parts of Derbyshire

Garden bin collections in some Derbyshire towns will be suspended for the winter months as demand for the service falls.

Collections across North East Derbyshire will be suspended.

In the north of the district, the last green bin collection this year will be week ending Friday, November 11. Collections resume week commencing March 13 2023.

While in the south of the district, the last green bin collection this year will be week ending Friday, November 18. Collections resume week commencing March 20 2023.

In Bolsover green bin collections will cease in the southern area of the district with some having their last collection this week. The colections in northern area of the district will finish next week, commencing on November 8. Collections will resume in the south Bolover District Council areas in the week commencing March 21 2023 and in the northern area a week later.

Garden bin collections will be postponed in Erewash borough as well. Brown bins in the north of the borough including Ilkeston and the surrounding areas have their last collection week commencing on November 28. Garden waste collections will restart on February 20.

Brown bins in the south of the borough in Long Eaton and the surrounding areas will have their last collection week commencing 5 December 2022. Garden waste collections will resume in the week of 27 February 2023.

North East Derbyshire District Council Cabinet member for the Environment, Cllr Charlotte Cupit, said: “Suspending green bin collections over the winter months is not a decision we take lightly.

“We have to carefully balance the emissions, carbon and other costs of running the service over the winter, with the significant reduction in green waste generated, and so we’re suspending the service as usual for this short period of time.

“Thank you to our hardworking refuse staff for their efforts in providing a year-round collection service whatever the weather. Streetscene staff who usually undertake the green bin collections will be deployed in other areas, such as street cleansing and collections over the Christmas period to help with the higher demand for those over winter.”

Residents are also reminded that they can put cooked food leftovers in their black bins during the green bin suspension period.
